Description
-
Roy Spooner and Pandora on the deck of the President Cleveland. Pandora is sitting up with her back to the camera. Spooner, wearing gloves, is reaching out towards her. She is secured by a rope or chain from her neck to the wall of the ship. Another man is standing behind Spooner. The ocean can be seen beyond the railing behind them.

Commentary
-
David Spooner, who was five-years-old at the time, recalls that: "On the boat Pandora was kept on deck where it was cooler, but she had to be tied very securely because at one point the boat passed through the edge of a hurricane." Roy Spooner remembers further challenges on board: "Our trip was further complicated by a strike among the ship’s service personnel as we travelled across the Pacific. Arranging meals and sleeping accommodation for three very small children, two adults and a panda on a crowded steamer left us little time to enjoy the Pacific!"
