Description
-
Roy Spooner and Pandora on the deck of the President Cleveland. Pandora is lying on her side with Spooner, wearing gloves, reaching out towards her. She is secured by a rope or chain from her neck to the wall of the ship. The ocean can be seen beyond the railing behind them.

Commentary
-
David Spooner, who was five-years-old at the time, recalls that: "On the boat Pandora was kept on deck where it was cooler, but she had to be tied very securely because at one point the boat passed through the edge of a hurricane." Roy Spooner remembers further challenges on board: "Our trip was further complicated by a strike among the ship’s service personnel as we travelled across the Pacific. Arranging meals and sleeping accommodation for three very small children, two adults and a panda on a crowded steamer left us little time to enjoy the Pacific!"
