Commentary
-
Private Don Willmott of OSS spent two weeks at Liangshan Airbase in 1944 awaiting transport to R2S, or "The Pocket," a base surrounded by Japanese territory in Anhui. The delay was caused by the lack of bomber planes to support the flight. They were expecting to be taken by a Douglas C-47 Skytrain like this one, which was destined for another location. When their craft finally arrived, it was the less popular Douglas C-46 Commando and there was no fighter escort for them.
