Commentary

The Chengdu Fenghuangshan Airfield was built in 1931 by Liu Xiang. This is probably Chiang Kaishek's personal airplane, on which he gave a ride to the graduating class at the Canadian School in West China in 1935. Another photograph of this plane was taken with the class and a caption stating "Here we are ready for our trip in the 'Junker' given by Generalissimo after exams in 1935." In this photo, one can clearly see the name "Emil Thuy" on the side. Thuy was a renowned WWI German fighter pilot. Between 1928 and 1938, Chiang had German military advisors training his National Revolutionary Army.
