Item

Title
David and Isabelle Stinson at the Hankow Airport
Identifier
DS_056
Description
Isabelle and David Stinson (2 years old) seen from behind as they wait for their Curtiss C-46 Commando to be refueled at Hankow, enroute from Shanghai to Chongqing. Both wear winter clothes in the freezing temperatures, Isabelle in a sporty jodhpur ensemble, David is a woolen snow suit. Trucks can be seen next to the plane in the background.
Commentary
The Stinsons were travelling back from furlough after the end of WWII when former Airforce planes, such as this Curtiss C-46 Commando, were repurposed for civilian travel. This plane was probably used to fly over "The Hump" in the Himalayas during the war, and may not have been serviced since then.
