Description
-
Two gunboats in the foreground and another in the background, probably at the mouth of the Yangtze River, near Shanghai. A third gunboat of the same or similar design can be seen in the background. Two Chinese boats are in the water between the two large boats. The two gunboats in the foreground have two masts and a single stack, along with pairs of "torpedo tubes."

Commentary
-
It is impossible to identify these ships without flags and/or ID markings. At least the Germans, Americans and Chinese had gunboats of this style plying the Yangtze at this time. The Germans' were of the Buzzard class, a fleet of six sister ships all named after birds, but it is unlikely that three of them would be gathered on the Yangtze at one time.
