Transciption
Sign over gate: Wu Cheng Gate (Chinese traditional: 武成門; Chinese simplified: 武成门). For the translation of "武成門 (Wu Cheng Gate)", Wu stands for fighting or complicting, Cheng for reaching a reconciliation or forming an alliance. When Wucheng Gate was opened in 1914, Chengdu was not at peace, and the naming of "Wucheng Gate" was intended to express a hope for peace and an end to warfare.
