Scene in Foochow's Suburbs
Caption
Foochow, Oct. 18, 1912. Dear Father, Every province has something distinctly different from the others and here in Foochow I have seen some of the Fukien characteristics. The field women and servant women go with "daggers drawn" as regards hair dressing. Three daggers (as worn by this woman) and a pair of earrings four inches in diameter complete a distinguished style. Am sorry the earrings do not show up but they are made of small wire. Am well and seeing and learning much about girls' school work in general and normal school work in particular. With love, Alice.

Description
The scene depicts three men working at a ditch with a water conveyor to move water up to the stone path. One of them is waving to the camera. At the top of the conveyor a woman carries two water buckets along the stone path. Alice describes her hairstyle on the back of this postcard. In the background are small houses.
Commentary
CW edited the image in Photoshop to enhance visibility. Alice Simpson took some additional teacher training in Fuzhou before returning to Chengdu after the 1911 Revolution. The American Women's Foreign Mission Society had a girls' normal school there where Alice probably did her training or observation of their methods.
