This personage in the very certain pose of having his picture taken is our Chinese teacher on the houseboat. He was sent down from Chengtu to Ichang to meet our party. See the pill-box cap. It was of black satin with a button of red silk cord on top. We seven beginners started with him. He was not the Chinese scholar my Chengtu teacher was.

The boat's mast is in the center of the image. Several boatmen can be seen sitting a top the cabin wearing white head scarves and patterned scarves over their legs. Two other boatmen are on deck behind the language teacher.
