The large brick and stucco buildings of Chongqing can be seen on the top of the hill in the background. The main subject of the image are the houses on stilts on the Yangtze River harbor. One can also see laundry hanging to dry in front of these houses' windows. Chinese wooden houseboats or junks are parked along the shoreline in the foreground.

“We stopped a few days in Chungking and visited a number of the missionaries. Of course we changed escorts. A peculiar sight here is that of houses along the river, on very steep banks, built "on stilts" or on high poles. This was to keep them above the water at high water. During the summer the water rises here more than a hundred feet” (Graham, n/d. Autobiography, p.43).
