Ch 4.4: The Backdoor to Sichuan

Allen-Stinson Burma Road Trip, 1938

Click here to read an account of this journey by Phyllis Allen Donaghy (daughter of Stewart Allen) and David Stinson (son of John Stinson).

During World War II, the Yangtze River was cut off by the Japanese occupation of China, and so the only way to enter "free China" in Sichuan was through the "backdoor" of either British Burma and French Indochina, and then through Yunnan over the Burma Road to Chongqing.

This chapter presents a carousel of photographs taken by John Stinson during his 1938 journey with Stewart Allen and missionary baggage through French Indochina and over the Burma Road in Yunnan to Chongqing.
