Description
Formal full figure portrait of Walter Small and Lottie Lawson Small at their wedding in Chengdu, November 25th, 1911 (as stated on their marriage certificate). On either side of them are traditional Chinese bridal dowry carriers. Although the couple had been courting for several years, their romance blossomed during their confinement in the CMM hospital where Lottie, a trained nurse, had cared for Walter while he suffered typhoid fever. According to family lore, the wedding was somewhat rushed in order to get it over with before the imminant evacuation to Shanghai. This timeline is proved out by corroborating accounts.
