Description
-
Dr. E. Kyle Simpson poses with a group of missionaries, including four women and two other men, at the top of stairs leading from the steamer. The women wear winter coats, large hats and fur muffs. A banner proclaiming the brand of steamer is partially cut off, but probably said "Asian Pacific Line."

"On the 11th of February we reached Yokohama.... In Canada, our mental picture of Japan is that of a country full of sturdy little men trained in the art of wrestling, and with their homes and streets filled with quaint-eyed women wearing very beautiful and gorgeous kimonos and carrying many colored umbrellas. But when we sail past modern fortifications and cement breakwater, and our boat ties up at a modern pier lined with warehouses of corrugated steel and brick, our dream quickly vanishes."
