Description
-
E. Kyle Simpson (front row left) poses with Rev., Mrs. and Margaret Quirmbach, and five other men aboard the steamer Siang Yang Maru. Notwithstanding the caption on the photo, which says Ichang, this steamer was a large boat that plied the passage between Shanghai and Hankow. It was one of three Nisshin Kisen steamers that began operation in 1907.

Commentary
-
The two men at the back row far left were probably Fred and George Rountree. Fred was the British architect who created the plan for WCUU, and George was his brother. The pair first met the Canadian Methodist party in Hankow, Feb. 26, after making arrangements to travel together through the CMM Toronto headquarters. They were in E. Kyle Simpson's party of four houseboats between Yichang and Wanhsien, where they departed to take the overland route to Chengdu.
