Description
Gordon Jones plays with baby Pandora on her way to the Bronx zoo in New York. Dr. Frank Dickinson had been instrumental in securing her, while Roy Spooner and family were responsible for transporting her from Hong Kong to San Francisco.
Commentary
Pandora was one of 13 live baby pandas to pass through Chengdu and Chongqing between 1936 and 1941. As director of the Business Agency, Gordon was responsible for arranging transportation for those pandas under the care of Canadian missionaries, including Pandora and Pan. A note on a mockup for the Old China Photo Project panel says, "At the edge of the tennis court at the Agency, 1938." I have been unable to positively identify "Dr. Richardson," but it might be A.R. Richardson of the China Inland Mission who appears in the 1926 and 1936 directories.
