Description
Horses are disembarking from a boat after crossing a river. They are wearing saddles and baskets over their muzzles, suggesting that they will be used for military purposes rather than as pack animals. Most likely, they are not part of the Stinson and Allen convoy, but rather encountered along the way.
Commentary
There are other reasons why I conclude the horses were not part of the Allen-Stinson caravan. Another photo of them in "The Allen-Stinson 1938 Trip into China" shows these horses all on the boat. This document makes no mention of horses accompanying the truck caravan. Neither does that of David Crockett Graham who took the same route three years later. Given the details of these narratives, they would mention if they were accompanied by over a dozen saddled horses.
